Sponsorship

The New York City Firefighters Hockey Club is a not-for-profit organization comprised of firefighters, officers and members who donate their time and efforts to raise funds to support the team’s expenses, as well as, the not-for-profit organizations we support.

Three firefighters organized the team, Tim Gallagher, Gene Scott and Ed McLoughlin.  They mapped out the destiny for the department’s first ice hockey team. For the 1970-71 seasons they skated against their counterparts from the Boston Fire Department for the first time with players like Jack Castronovo, Jim Fanzizzi, Joe Downey, and Ed Lynch.

The New York City Firefirefighters Hockey Team competes in events worldwide.  Some of the events we have competed in are the Southern Ontario Firefighters Hockey Tournament, the World Police – Fire Games in Colorado, Calgary Canada, Stockholm Sweden and Indianapolis, IN.   We have competed in benefits and tournaments in Boston, Orlando, Fl. Las Vegas, London, Ontario, Vancouver, Canada, Providence RI, Washington DC, Atlanta, Montreal, Quebec and the Massachusetts State Police Annual Hockey Tournament.

The team also competes in a Men’s Adult league and of course we can’t forget our favorite hometown event, the Annual FDNY – NYPD Game, which is now in going into its thirty-first year.  Our organization consists of two teams an “A” Team and Alumni Team. The A Team competes in the “A” Division and the Alumni Team consists of former team members over 35.  In 1996 Lt. Mike Rossidis established our own tournament, the “King of the Ice” Firehouse Tournament.   Over 95 New York City Firehouses compete in this annual event sponsored by our organization. Coordinated by Assistant Managers Capt. John Fortunato and Lt. Pat Cleary, this tournament in it’s ninth year is the “World’s Largest Firehouse Hockey Tournament”.

In 2001, Steve Doyle and the FDNY Hockey Team founded the Teddy Bears That Care Program,Inc. a not-for-profit charitable program that provides teddy bears to children throughout the United States.   In 2002 the program grew in size and became a separate organization, the board of directors consist of several team members. Through donating teddy bears we hope to comfort children and to help lessen the anxiety of those that are experiencing loss, injury, grief or trauma. This nation-wide program provides teddy bears to hospitals, burn camps, shelters, social workers, child advocates, public safety agencies, and not-for-profit organizations. Since the program was founded over 13, 200 teddy bears have been distributed.

Some of the charities and organizations we help support are the UFA’s Widows and Children’s Fund, UFOA Scholarship Fund, National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, Teddy Bears That Care Program, FDNY Memorial Day Program, NYC Fire Museum, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, Thomas Elsasser Memorial Scholarship Fund, Uniformed Firefighters Association Scholarship Fund, New York State Fallen Fighters Memorial, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, Pace University – United Way Drive and the National Safe Home Foundation.  We also donate merchandise throughout the year to assist charities and not-for-profit organizations with their fund raising events.

This is what it’s all about, coming together to enjoy sportsmanship and helping others.
