OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE FROM MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
NEWS RELEASE
FDNY v. NYPD HOCKEY RETURNS TO MADISON SQUARE GARDEN TO HONOR 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2021 "HOCKEY HEROES" TO BE BROADCAST LIVE ON ESPN2
New York, NY, (July 28, 2021) – FDNY Hockey and NYPD Hockey today announced that a special "Hockey Heroes" matchup -- honoring the 20 th anniversary of 9/11 -- will take place on Thursday, September 9 at Madison Square Garden. The evening is set to begin with pre-game ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. ET and, for the first time, will air live on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. ET.
The commemorative game will extend the long-standing rivalry between the FDNY and NYPD to its 47 th year dating back to 1973 when the Fire Department won the first matchup. The FDNY currently leads the all-time series with 25 wins to the NYPD's 18 to go along with two draws (the game was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
The amateur hockey game, which is comprised of Firefighters, Police Officers, and their respective members, has proven to be quite a draw selling out Madison Square Garden four times, including the 2002 event which was the first after the 9/11 attacks.
Prior to the puck drop, both teams will commemorate the 20 th anniversary of 9/11. In a special ceremony, the teams will honor those lost in the attacks and all the members who have since died from 9/11 related illnesses. Additionally, Firefighters and Police Officers lost in the line of duty over the course of the past two years will also be remembered.
Proceeds from the annual FDNY vs. NYPD Hockey game will benefit various charities including the Ray Pfeifer Foundation and the PBA Widows and Children's Fund.
"This is a special year for our team to come together and pay tribute to the 343 brothers
we lost on September 11, 2001. It's also a time to remember those we have lost over
the past 20 years and raise money to help our brothers and sisters suffering from 9/11
related illnesses. With the game on ESPN2, people around the country will have the
opportunity to join us in paying tribute to our 9/11 heroes. We also want to thank MSG
who has been a great partner throughout this process, and we can't wait to take the ice
in front of a packed house at Madison Square Garden." - FDNY Hockey Team
"We believe there is no better time than now to return a little normalcy to the city and all
come together to remember the heroes we lost 20 years ago. As we remember the
heroic acts of our brothers and sisters in blue, we remember the sacrifices ALL our first
responders made that day. They will never be forgotten. This game gives us the
opportunity to raise money and help the people who are still suffering from the effects of
that day 20 years later." - NYPD Hockey Team
All valid tickets from the previously scheduled April 4, 2020 game will be re-issued. Based on current government mandates, to attend the "Hockey Heroes" event at The Garden, guests will need to provide either proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test (which can be antigen or PCR). Full vaccination means the event is at least 14 days after the person received their final vaccine dose. Antigen tests must be taken within six hours of the event start time, and PCR tests must be taken within 72 hours of the day of the event.
